VP, Stop Loss Business – Minneapolis

Summary

Provides overall leadership to the development of stop loss approaches, programs, and related business strategies across the organization.  Leads the development of stop loss fronting carrier relationships, captive and direct stop loss writer establishment strategies; oversees the integration and development of all system and operations supporting the stop loss business and has final approval on stop loss quoting and underwriting.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction across the company in the development and alignment of strategies and programs for stop loss, underwriting, captive, direct writing, and related business operations to ensure objectives are met
  • Provides leadership to executive management in establishing stop loss goals, objectives, and strategies within the organizational plan, including controls, reconciliation, and reserves
  • Partners and coordinates with other groups on tracking, reporting and cost management of claims, including escalation, communications and controls as needed
  • Ensures appropriate levels of communication regarding strategies, programs and initiatives with stakeholders, managers, employees for awareness, understanding, alignment and proper management
  • Leads the executive oversight of stop loss plans underwriting and strategies, including analysis, trends, and performance management; has final approval over threshold and identifies and removes challenges or adjusts as appropriate
  • Develops quoting and operational capabilities with preferred carrier partners; ensures appropriate coverage and scale, as well as due diligence and agreements
  • Ensures appropriate levels of communication regarding strategies, programs and initiatives with stakeholders, managers, employees for awareness, understanding, alignment and proper management
  • Leads internal systems development to support stop loss renewal quoting, scaled operations, and monthly financial reporting, including IBNR reserves; oversees monthly operational reports to be standardized and distributed
  • Ensures the development, implementation and interpretation of policies and procedures and compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receives legal guidance and interpretation when required

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Data Science, Finance, or related field
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in the stop loss market, including at least 5 years of leadership in these operations
  • Stop loss, underwriting, captive, and direct writing markets, and approaches
  • Risk management claims and related contract management, services, and administration
  • Business, operations, and functional strategies
  • General business planning, competitive analysis, and strategy development
  • Multiple strategies to understand, influence and manage business results
  • Financial management (P & L, balance sheet, forecasting, and budgets) to ensure return on investment and meeting financial objectives   
  • Applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Computer applications and systems related to the work
  • Lead related risk operations in a dynamic environment
  • Communicate effectively and build relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Be flexible, adapt to change
  • Provide leadership to executive management in the development stop loss, underwriting, captive, and direct writing strategies
  • Ensure the effective return on investment on resources, programs, and approaches
  • Create alignment to overall strategies, programs, and initiatives with multiple stakeholders
  • Outline strategies and approaches to understand business results
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Lead, motivate and develop individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Determine and ensure the effective use of resources in a cross-functional and dynamic environment
