Benefits Strategist – San Francisco


Manages the process to analyze market, customer or operational claims experience and utilization to build product or insurance models.  Serves as a subject matter expert, oversees updates to models and standards and provides input and advice on benefit strategies and programs. 


  • Manages the process to analyze the experience and utilization of current and potential markets or customers to build business models under the insurance product
  • Manages and/or oversees the updates, revisions or changes to models, analyses, claims, networks, and related areas based on market or customer discussions
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in specific benefit strategies, industries, analyses, and related areas
  • Identifies potential areas of waste, inconsistencies and opportunities within the market or customer claims experience
  • Partners with other functions to review, analyze and consult other markets prospects or segments
  • Works to facilitate meetings and develops communications to provide feedback to teams on models, analyses, priorities, and concepts for integration into the business
  • Provides input and advice regarding developing and aligning benefit strategies and programs, policies, and procedures
  • Ensures processes and operations complies with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; provides interpretation within area not requiring formal legal opinions
  • Escalates specific areas that represent a risk outside of expectation, tolerance or company guidelines that cannot be resolved based on standards or models
  • Acts as key point of contact for any questions/needs regarding benefit strategies
  • Analyzes and trends benefits, claims and operational data to identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements


Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline required
  • At least 5 years of experience in health care analytics and program evaluation

Knowledge of

  • Comprehensive principles, practices and techniques of experience and utilization data; areas are very complex to specialized in nature
  • Development and implementation benefit strategies, programs, policies, and procedures
  • Risk management practices within health care and benefit operations
  • Approaches and practices to analyze, model and trend benefit data
  • Approaches and practices to identify waste, inconsistencies, and opportunities in benefit programs
  • Process improvement principles and programs
  • Project and program management principles and practices
  • Computer applications and systems related to the work

Ability to

  • Communicate effectively and build relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Be flexible, adapt to change
  • Perform comprehensive benefit analysis and modeling in a variety of industries
  • Oversee and administer comprehensive and varied benefit strategy functions
  • Train and guide others in policies and procedures related to the work
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in specific benefit strategies, industries, and analyses
  • Interpret, apply and explain applicable laws, codes and regulations
  • Provide consulting services to supervisors and staff
  • Prepare functionals reports, correspondence, and other written materials
  • Use initiative and independent judgment within established organizational and department guidelines
